Exhaust system mods are one of the most popular as well as one of the most important modifications you can do to your Scion xD. A downpipe, also sometimes referred to as test pipe, is a short piece of exhaust pipe that's designed to replace the upper section of the Scion xD's exhaust system after the headers. Sometimes they replace the catalytic converter, in which case they are called test pipes. Test pipes are illegal and you can be fined heavily if you're caught with them on your vehicle.

Exhaust headers are often an overlooked upgrade for the Scion xD. Many owners are quick to purchase a cat-back or axle-back exhaust system to change the exhaust note and free up some horsepower, but few actually enjoy the benefits of a full engine-back exhaust package. Header design theory is very complex, but in the most basic form you should look for equal length tubing with a clean collector. There are significant power gains to be found by upgrading the OEM exhaust manifold to a well designed aftermarket header solution.

Each company has taken a different approach at the exhaust design and here you can compare the features you are looking for, listen to sound clips, and see plenty of pictures to help you decide which exhaust setup is best for you. Axle-back, means these exhaust systems only replace the rear-most section of the Scion xD's exhaust system including the muffler.
