Tires

The factory tires included on the Scion tC are either Bridgestone Potenza RE92's or Yokohama S32A's. Both tires feature a 'Z' speed rating. Optionally available are the Enkei 18" wheels. These larger wheels come with 225/40-18 Pirelli PZero Nero M&S.

Wheels

What are the factory wheel options for the tc?

What is the spare tires size on the tC?

The Scion tC features a donut type spare. The size is T125/70 D17

Tire Pressure Sensors

The tire pressure sensing system has CHANGED for the 2007 model year!!!

In the prior model years a tire pressure problem was "estimated" by the 'puter using input from the ABS sensors at each wheel. If a wheel rotated at a different speed from what was expected by the 'puter for an extended period, the 'puter assumed it was a difference in pressure causing it and raised an alarm.

The 2007 tC has a new system, with actual pressure sensor transmitters ATTACHED TO THE WHEEL VALVE STEMS.

These transmitters CAN be transferred to your new wheels.

If you do not transfer the transmitters to your new wheels, the chassis receiver will, obviously, not receive the expected signals, and will indicate a trouble alarm.

Here is a brief description, not much more than a hint, really, from a very recent TSB:

PD038-06 TIRE PRESSURE SENSING TRANSMITTER ACTIVATION PROCEDURE

6/1/2006 - 2007 model year Scion tC vehicles.

A tire pressure sensing transmitter is built into each tire valve, and the measured tire pressure data is transmitted through a Tire Pressure Warning System antenna to the Tire Pressure Warning System receiver.

The tire pressure sensing transmitters used for the Tire Pressure Warning System (TPWS) on 2007 model year Scion tC vehicles need to be activated during

Pre-Delivery Service (PDS).

I do not yet have the TSB, and won't be trying to get a copy for probably another week, but thought I should pop this warning up in front of the new '07 owners before they got rid of their stock wheels - and transmitters...

Here is the TSB

Here is an example of one of the TPMS transmitters Toyota is currently using on some of it's cars. I expect the transmitter for the Scions to be very similar.

The monitor/transmitter is attached to the tire valve, inside the tire, like this:

Be aware that this valve-stem/monitor/transmitter may NOT fit all after market wheels.

The lithium batteries in these units typically have a five year lifespan.

The new method of monitoring tire pressure is being required by federal law, as the older method used - the ABS system monitoring tire rotation speed - will not meet some of the requirements of FMVSS Section 138. 70% of a manufacturer's production of new vehicles must meet the Section 138 requirements by September 2006, and 100% must meet the requirements by September 2007.
