[edit] 2008 Scion xD Available Colors

The Scion xB color selection is limited to six colors for the 2008 model year car.

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Standard Features

The listing of standard features is impressive for such a low cost vehicle. Scion's success is driven by their feature sets in combination with their extremely low price. Typically cars in the price range of the Scion xD come pretty stripped down with no power options, few amenities, and a cheap feel. The Scion xD delivers on the past Scion success adding even more standard features for the same low price. Read this list to find out what Scion has included on their 2008 year model xD:

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Exterior Overview

The xD is slightly less rounded than the xA, taking cues like a boxy grille and vertical bumper portals from the redesigned xB. Upscale touches include body-colored door trimmings and side mirrors with integrated turn signals. The headlights look similar to those on Toyota's RAV4.

Sixteen-inch wheels are standard. Three available wheel cover designs are shared with the xB.

[edit] Front

While the Scion xD has the general shape of its predecessor, has a smoother and more aggressive look and feel thanks to rounded-off corners, smoother lines and a wider stance. The front end is wider and should appeal to more enthusiasts and casual owners alike.

[edit] Side

The 2008 xD is larger than the xA, but its general profile is very similar. This of course is because the xD is the 2nd generation of the Toyota ist in Japan while the xA is the first generation. Turn-signal repeaters in the side mirrors are standard. The low ride height makes stepping in and out of the xD easy.

[edit] Rear

From the rear, the xD looks "fat". This is a good thing since it creats a larger look to the car than it really is.

[edit] 16-inch wheels

Steel wheels measuring 16 inches in diameter are standard, and there are three (3) optional covers to choose from.

[edit] Headlights and Tailights

Horizontal headlamps and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors are design elements taken from the Scion family lineup. The taillights on the Scion xD are somewhat more square than the xA had. They dont angle forward as much and are slightly smaller.

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Interior Overview

The five-passenger interior includes a 60/40-split folding backseat that can recline 10 degrees and adjust 6 inches forward and back. A storage well sits below the cargo floor. Other places to stash things include a dual-compartment glove box and a tray below the steering wheel. On the dashboard, a single gauge integrates the tachometer and speedometer.

[edit] Front seats

While they do look a little basic, the Scion xD's mesh front seats are supportive and comfortable. Even though the car has rather wide D-pillars (below), visibility isn't significantly compromised thanks to the long rear-door windows.

[edit] Rear seats

The standard 60/40-split folding rear seat has plenty of room for adults thanks to generous amounts of headroom and legroom and a comfortable backrest angle. The rear seats have a variety of movements allowing you to make the mostof storage and seating space in the compact car.

[edit] Dashboard

The Scion xD has the typical dashboard layout. Gauges are front and center in front of the driver, while all of the audio, navigation, and climate controls are dead center between the passenger and drivers seats.

[edit] Gauges

The xD's unique, radar-like speedometer and tachometer have been consolidated into one circular gauge centered on the instrument panel. Indicator lamps, LCD fuel gauge and odometer flank the centralized gauge.

[edit] Glove box

[edit] Cargo

The Scion xD's boxy shape pays dividends in the cargo area. With the rear seats up, there's of room. But when they're folded flat, there's a near quadrupling ofcubic feet of space. A hidden storage space is located below the rear cargo area.

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Audio and Navigtion

The xD's standard Pioneer stereo includes an auxiliary jack for MP3 players. It displays track listings, and drivers can adjust the volume or skip ahead using steering-wheel controls. An optional stereo upgrade includes a faceplate capable of displaying pictures and short video clips.

[edit] Audio System

There are three available stereo system options for the 2008 Scion xD.

  1. The standard unit: It is essentially the same as the upgraded unit available in the 06's, but restyled. Includes iPod integration, 160watt maximum power output, and steering wheel controls
  2. The Premium Unit: brand new Pioneer unit with a miniscreen for that plays clips, and has RCA outputs on the back. The xD's optional premium audio system adds one more feature to the standard head unit, the ability to download "skins" to play on the LCD faceplate. Customers can download images, four-second video clips and eight-second movies from Pioneer's website. In addition, Pioneer software allows customers to burn their own images and movies onto a CD and upload them onto the available head unit.
  3. The AVN Navigation system:

[edit] MP3 compatibility

In addition to the more conventional auxiliary input jack, the Scion xD also includes an iPod-specific plug that lets you control the device using the stereo or steering wheel controls. It also charges your iPod so you will never have to be away from your favorite music again. The head units integrate track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit's screen.

[edit] Powertrain

[edit] Four-cylinder engine

The xD's new 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is bigger and more powerful than the one it replaces in the xA. The Scion 2ZR-FE is a DOHC, 16 valve, 1.8L (1797cc) engine equipped with VVT-i. This all-new engine is now replacing the 1ZZ-FE engine in most applications. Output for this engine is rated at 136 hp at 6000 RPM and 129 ft·lbf of torque at 4400 RPM.

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Customized

Five Axis is hot on the trail of Scion. Their close relationship has allowed 5Axis to produce customized vehicles even before Scion has released them to the public. This decked out Five Axis xD shows how great this car can look with just a few modifications. A body kit, dropped suspension, and aggressive wheels can really set off the look of your xD.

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Pricing Information

Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc., is pleased to announce pricing for the all-new Scion xD compact urban utility vehicle. It will be arriving at dealerships in early August 2007. Pricing will be announced to the public on Friday, July 13, 2007.

Exterior Styling

The all-new 2008 xD enters the Scion lineup as the aggressive compact hatch with unique appeal to the young buyer. Its distinctive form exhibits stability with a firm stance and wide overall width. Massive fenders and short overhangs contribute to the xD’s muscular exterior. Horizontal headlamps and turn signals integrated into the side mirrors are design elements taken from the Scion family lineup. A chrome exhaust tip and standard 16-inch wheels are offered with a choice of three wheel covers.

Performance

An all-new 1.8L DOHC engine with dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) provides the Scion xD with excellent acceleration performance and fuel economy. This engine is optimally combined with either a 5 speed manual or 4 speed automatic transmission. The 2008 model year fuel economy ratings are calculated under a new formula that is more reflective of real world driving conditions.

xD fuel economy ratings are comparable to xA (30 combined with new formula, 34 combined with old formula), even with the improved engine performance and larger size. The xD features a front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension. The suspension and handling characteristics have been carefully tuned to ensure excellent drivability, stability, and riding comfort.

The xD interior features room for 5 passengers and cargo. Driver and front passenger bucket seats provide a sporty yet comfortable ride. The 60/40 split rear seats fold flat, slide, and recline for ultimate comfort and cargo flexibility. The interior also features 4 cup holders and 4 bottle holders, rear deck cargo hooks, and hidden storage boxes under the cargo deck.

Comfort and convenience features include cruise control and a tilt steering wheel with audio controls. Power windows, door locks, and keyless entry are also standard. A radar-like meter displays the speedometer and tachometer in one concentric gauge. A multi-information display allows the driver to toggle through the odometer/trip meter and cruise information including instant fuel consumption, average fuel consumption after refueling, drivable distance, and average vehicle speed.

xD shares the same standard audio system with the ’08 model year Scion xB and Scion tC. The 160-watt Pioneer AM/FM/CD audio system features direct iPod connectivity and a mini-jack port. iPod song navigation and selection can be controlled from either the head unit or steering wheel controls. While the iPod is connected, the track, artist, and album information is displayed on the audio screen. In addition, the user has the ability to program a personal welcome message on the head unit display. The optional premium audio system has all the same standard features, yet has the added ability to download images, four-second video clips, and eight-second movies onto its OEL screen. Both audio systems offer key Scion audio system features such as Scion Sound Processing (SSP), satellite radio compatibility, MP3 and WMA capability, Automatic Sound Leveling (ASL) and Sound Retouch Technology (SRT), which provides clearer CD sound quality. An ultra-premium Scion Navigation System (SNS) is also available. The standard six speaker configuration consists of two tweeters and four speakers (one in each door panel).

[edit] 2008 Scion xD Press Release

February 8, 2007 – Chicago - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., revealed the all-new 2008 xD five-door subcompact at a press conference today at the 2007 Chicago Auto Show.

"The xD is a clever new take on the five-door urban subcompact, with style and flair to match its efficiency and utility," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "The xD's aggressive styling is wrapped in a small, agile package, while its interior offers impressive details and a spacious cabin."

New Scion Style

The xD's futuristic exterior characterizes it as a Scion with its simple surfaces and sharp lines that flow from front to rear. Its urban personality is communicated by its wide stance, thick muscular body, accentuated wheel flares and large tires. Other styling cues that set the xD apart include a long and narrow back window, and the Scion family traits—horizontal headlamps, an integrated rectangular lower and upper grille, and turn signals built into the side mirrors.

Good Handling

Engineers designed the Scion xD with a short, wide frame in mind for better handling and comfort. In addition, the Scion xD features an L-arm type MacPherson strut in the front and torsion beam suspension in the rear for increased stability and a pleasing ride.

The xD's powerful stance sits on 16-inch steel wheels and 195/60 R16 tires. Customers will be able to choose from three all-new standard wheel covers which will also be shared with the all-new xB. The xD features front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes.

Clean and Modern Interior

Designers focused on a clean, comfortable and futuristic interior style. The simple dash features an instrument panel located directly in front of the driver while the center cluster—digital clock and HVAC and audio controls—flows down the center. The xD's unique, radar-like speedometer and tachometer have been consolidated into one circular gauge centered on the instrument panel. Indicator lamps, LCD fuel gauge and odometer flank the centralized gauge.

The xD features front bucket seats and 60/40 fold flat rear seats for a level cargo space. The rear seats were designed for comfort and utility as they can slide forward and back up to six inches for additional leg room and cargo area. In addition, they can recline ten degrees and be adjusted into five different positions.

Storage and cargo space is aplenty in the xD. Up front, the xD has a storage tray located beneath the steering wheel, a small box in the front of the center console for holding portable music players or cell phones, an upper and lower glove box, and driver's side change box. A hidden storage space is located below the rear cargo area.

Upgraded Audio System

The xD's standard 160-watt maximum output Pioneer audio system is focused on youth lifestyle as it features iPod connectivity and a mini-jack port located beneath the HVAC controls for easy access. This standard head unit integrates track, artist and album information from the iPod into a one-line display on the head unit's screen. Connectivity is achieved by simply plugging the iPod into a port via a connector cable, providing outstanding sound quality through the car's stereo system and constant power to the iPod. Music is controlled through the head unit and the steering wheel audio control buttons. The mini-jack port allows users to listen to their portable music collection through the xD's Pioneer speakers.

Since many Scion customers add in-car entertainment systems to their vehicle, the xD will come standard with rear head unit outputs allowing for the addition of external amps to boost power to the front and rear speakers, and subwoofers. All head unit features remain unchanged if this feature is used.

Both the standard and premium head units retain key Scion audio system features such as Scion Sound Processing (SSP) where listeners can choose from three pre-set equalizer settings, satellite radio compatibility, a user-customizable welcome screen, MP3 and WMA capability, Automatic Sound Leveling (ASL) and Sound Retouch Technology (SRT), which provides clearer CD sound quality. Both systems will also feature six speakers: two tweeters and speakers in each door panel.

Driving Performance

The xD is powered by the lively 1.8 L four-cylinder engine with dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) that puts out 128 horsepower. Customers have the choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. This 2ZR-FE engine features a roller rocker system and light weight piston for better fuel economy and a piston cooling oil jet for better efficiency.

Standard Features

The xD comes mono spec like all Scion vehicles. Customers need to choose exterior color and transmission type, while the only factory option is Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC). The xD comes with generous and upscale standard features including power steering, windows, door locks and mirrors; remote keyless entry; air conditioning; four-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA); driver and front passenger dual stage airbags; front seat-mounted side airbags; front and rear side curtain airbags; first-aid kit; a tire pressure monitor system and tilt steering wheel with audio controls.

All Scion models come with complimentary factory-recommended maintenance services at the first 5,000 mile and 10,000 mile intervals, to be performed by an authorized Scion or Toyota dealership.

Color Palette

The xD will have high-quality dark charcoal interior fabric and will be available in six exterior colors, Super White, Silver Streak Mica, Black Sand Pearl, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Barcelona Red Metallic and Nautical Blue Metallic.
